Day 1: Arrive in Lima

Upon your arrival in Lima, a representative from the travel agency will meet you at the Jorge Chávez International Airport to take you to your hotel in the residential zone of Miraflores.

Day 2: Lima - Cusco / City Tour of Cusco

We’ll get you back to the airport and on a morning flight from Lima to the Andean city of Cusco. After lunch, a local guide will meet you at your hotel to take you on a tour of the city and nearby sights.

Our first stop is the Inca ceremonial center of Sacsayhuaman, overlooking the city of Cusco. The site, with its massive stonewalls and structures, is a perfect example of masterful Inca stonemasonry and architecture. Our next stop is the Inca ruin of Qenqo with its subterranean passages and zigzagging channels carved in stone. One of the chambers in Qenqo has a carved stone table where the Incas may have mummified their dead. We follow Qenqo with a short visit to the Inca archaeological site of Pukapukara and Tambomachay, best known for its temple dedicated to the god of Water.

We return to Cusco and visit the most important religious center of the Incas - the Temple of Koricancha. At Koricancha, offerings to the gods and the Inca's ancestors were made each day. Finally, we visit the beautiful Cathedral of Santo Domingo on the main plaza in Cusco. This enormous cathedral, finished in 1654, contains nearly four hundred oil paintings, including many from the Cusco School, which was prominent in the 17th century. Among them is a painting of The Last Supper by Marcos Zapata, showing Jesus and his disciples about to dine on Guinea pig (Guinea pig was the main course at sacred feasts in Inca times).

After our city tour, the guide will drop you off at your hotel.

Day 3: Cusco - Aguas Calientes

A bus will pick you up at your Cusco hotel early in the morning and take you to the Poroy station where you will catch the 6:45 am train to the town of Aguas Calientes. The train ride to Aguas Calientes is one of the most scenic and unforgettable experiences in Peru. As the sun comes up, the train travels through Cusco neighborhoods, small farms and villages before descending through a canyon into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After the village of Ollantaytambo, the train continues to descend, wind along the Urubamba River and through the cloud forest. After approximately four hours, the train arrives in Aguas Calientes, where our local guide welcomes you and takes you on a short walk to your hotel.

You have the afternoon to explore Aguas Calientes. We strongly recommend you visit the Museum of Machu Picchu, about a kilometer from Aguas Calientes. The museum has a superb collection of Inca artifacts found in the area, virtual videos of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and historical photographs of the discovery of Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham. In the upper part of Aguas Calientes there are famous hot springs with relaxing thermal baths.

Day 4: Tour of Machu Picchu - Cusco

After an early breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and you’ll set off for Machu Picchu by 5:30 am. An early departure and visit to this popular site is the best way to see the vast ruins and avoid large crowds of visitors. The half hour bus ride to Machu Picchu follows a steep winding road with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

For centuries, Machu Picchu had been the well-known legend of an Inca settlement. In 1911, the American explorer, Hiram Bingham, discovered the ruins and today, Machu Picchu is one of the most visited sites in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site stands at 2,430m (7972ft) above sea level in the middle of a tropical mountain cloud forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. Your guide will show you the most important areas of this great Inca City, including the Intiwatana (Sun Dial), the Sun Temple, the urban sector, and the agricultural areas. Machu Picchu is one the most formidable urban centers of the Incas, built at the height of the Inca Empire. Its huge walls, terraces and ramps blend in naturally with the surrounding rock cliffs. The guided tour of Machu Picchu lasts about two and a half hours after which you will have free time to explore the ruins on your own, walk the Sun Gate or climb Huayna Picchu Mountain. Huayna Picchu is the large peak seen in the background of every classic photograph of Machu Picchu and the views from the summit are stunning.

We return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch and some shopping in the many craft shops before we take the late afternoon train back to Cusco.
